The former world champion has spoken out after the death of US chess star Daniel Naroditsky, describing the 29-year-old's loss as a tragedy while condemning critics for mounting what he termed an "deeply cynical and unlawful targeted harassment" against him and his loved ones.
Kramnik's Statement
The fifty-year-old former world champion, who has faced widespread condemnation for accusing Naroditsky of online cheating without evidence, offered sympathies but denied any personal attacks.
"Despite the tensions, I was the only person in the chess community who, observing through footage Daniel's obvious health issues a day before his death, openly urged for him to get assistance," Kramnik stated. "The ensuing efforts, immediately following his passing, to directly link this sorrowful incident to my name … violate every limit of basic human morality."
Kramnik asserted his earlier requests for examination of Naroditsky's digital games had been overlooked "despite a significant amount of evidence", and stated he would provide material to "appropriate officials". He mentioned his lawyers were preparing civil and criminal suits over "false accusations" that have resulted in dangers against him and his family.
Investigation Details
The demise of the grandmaster may have been the result of a drug overdose and is being investigated as a possible suicide, according to a law enforcement document released Thursday. A report from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police department says Naroditsky was found dead Sunday evening and describes the case as a "Death/suicide/overdose/Sudden/Natural Death Investigation."
"Last Sunday, October 19 at approximately 07:11pm, officers answered an assist medic call in the vicinity of Colin Crossing," the document states. "When they reached the scene, an unconscious individual was located and later pronounced deceased by a medic."
Chess World Response
Anger over Kramnik's behavior has shaken the chess world. Grandmaster Nakamura described his actions "disgusting", while five-time world champion Carlsen described it as "terrible". GM from India Sarin, who played Naroditsky in his last digital game, blamed Kramnik for "taking a life", saying his self-appointed pursuit against suspected cheaters was ineffective and "totally inappropriate".
Naroditsky's Legacy
A Stanford-educated prodigy and former world youth champion, Naroditsky gathered more than 800k fans on Twitch and YouTube. Known as Danya, he was praised for his humor, clarity and humility, becoming a prominent figure in chess's pandemic-era boom. He was also among the globe's top competitors under shorter time controls, finishing ninth at last year's speed chess title event in New York.
Naroditsky consistently denied the accusations but acknowledged the toll they had taken on his psychological well-being. "Ever since the Kramnik stuff, I feel like if I begin performing strongly, people assume the worst," Naroditsky remarked in his last online broadcast.
Official Responses
The World Chess Federation announced recently it was "investigating" Kramnik's actions. "The way Kramnik approaches it simply is unacceptable," Fide chief executive Sutovsky stated. The federation intends to commemorate Naroditsky with a memorial award.
Fide president Dvorkovich later verified that all of Kramnik's public statements about Naroditsky, before and after his death, would be referred to the organisation's Ethics and Disciplinary Commission "to be reviewed independently".
"Life and human worth are fundamental values universally upheld," Dvorkovich emphasized. "The chess community has long respected the accomplishments of GM Vladimir Kramnik, but such stature brings a responsibility to maintain the standards of fairness and respect."
Loved Ones' Wish
Naroditsky's family have said they wish he is recalled not because of the hostility he endured but for "the happiness and motivation he brought people every day". Carlsen called him "an asset to chess", while Hikaru Nakamura described him as "the best of us".
